Marika (Mari) Hanson grew up in Jackson Hole, WY and they are returning as Head Coach for the Big Mountain Team for a 2nd season and a 3rd season overall with MRT. They have been coaching for MRT since 2024, first as an assistant coach with the Big Mountain Team then as Head Coach in 25/26 and now in 26/27. 

Mari grew up formed by the steep mountains and intense winters that exist in the Teton area, and they ski raced from the ages of 8-18, traveling all across the Western US. Mari then started coaching in Jackson for the same team they grew up on in the season of 2020/2021. They coached for the U12 Alpine Race Programs at both Jackson and Snowbird for a few years, continuing to work on and improve their coaching skills and understanding of ski technique and tactics. Mari also worked as a ski patroller in the winters of 2023 and 2024, increasing their knowledge and experience in emergency medicine and leadership skills. Around that same time, Mari started competing in the IFSA Freeride World Qualifiers because they missed the challenge and progression that comes from competition. This started their journey in Freeride, and they fell in love with the sport and the ability to use race fundamentals through a freeride lens. 

Mari is excited to bring their technical background and knowledge, experience in the competition scene, and knowledge of freeride skiing to the team. Their coaching philosophy centers on finding and creating power, purpose, joy, and freedom within the team and the sport-always emphasizing fun! They are beyond excited for another winter and to support MRT athletes and share these ideals and experiences with them.
